SOAPSTONE ANALYSIS BUT MOSTLY SUBJECT
David Brooks wrote a column called "The Learning Virtues" in February, 2013. The column included information about a lady named Jin Li, who was from China and came to America to teach high school. Brooks made the prime focus of the article Li's life and differences between Chinese and western students. Brooks uses this background information to support his argument that school should not be taken for-granted. Which is totally true. We have such nice facilities, but most students come to see friends and goof off, while in China it is a whole different story. He wrote in his article that American students get picked at for being "nerds" and for wanting to learn, but he also states that the Chinese culture does not even have such vocabulary as that. Brooks is not saying that we should all look up to the Chinese culture, but that we could be more like them. He explains this in the most sincere and strait-forward tone possible. Maybe we should focus on the education and what we can become by learning such knowledge rather than being lazy and just trying to make it.
